A Tropical Storm Warning has been in effect for portions of Mexico’s southern Pacific coast as Tropical Storm Boris moved ashore and brought dangerous weather conditions to the region. Areas including parts of Guerrero and Oaxaca have faced the greatest threats from heavy rainfall, flash flooding, mudslides, and gusty winds.
Main Hazards
- 🌧️ Torrential rainfall capable of producing flash flooding.
- ⛰️ Mudslides and landslides in mountainous terrain.
- 🌊 Rough surf and dangerous coastal conditions.
- 💨 Tropical-storm-force wind gusts near the coast.
Rainfall Threat
Forecasts have indicated widespread rainfall totals of 4–10 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. These rainfall rates can quickly overwhelm streams and drainage systems, especially in mountainous areas of southern Mexico.
Current Situation
Boris has weakened after moving inland, but the flooding threat continues because tropical systems often produce their worst impacts through heavy rain long after winds diminish. Additional tropical moisture from nearby Tropical Storm Cristina is expected to keep wet conditions across parts of southern Mexico and Central America this week.
Safety Tips
- Avoid flooded roadways.
- Stay away from rivers, streams, and steep hillsides.
- Monitor local emergency alerts.
- Be prepared to move to higher ground if flooding develops.
- Never drive through flooded roads—water depth can be deceptive.
