Small Craft Advisory Issued for Portions of Hawaii as Strong Trade Winds Create Hazardous Boating Conditions
Boaters across portions of Hawaii are being urged to use extreme caution as a Small Craft Advisory (SCA) remains in effect due to strengthening trade winds and rough seas. The advisory impacts several of the state’s typically windier coastal waters, where hazardous marine conditions are expected to continue through Friday afternoon.
Advisory Areas
The National Weather Service has issued the Small Craft Advisory for the following marine zones:
- Alenuihaha Channel
- Pailolo Channel
- Maalaea Bay
- Big Island Leeward Waters
- Big Island Southeast Waters
- Kauai Channel
- Kauai Leeward Waters
- Kauai Northwest Waters
- Oahu Leeward Waters
Why the Advisory Was Issued
A strengthening area of high pressure north of the Hawaiian Islands is producing strong east-northeast trade winds between 20 and 25 knots, generating rough and choppy seas ranging from 4 to 9 feet, especially through the channels surrounding Maui County and the Big Island. These conditions are dangerous for smaller vessels and inexperienced mariners.
While weather across the islands will remain generally warm with passing showers, persistent trade winds will continue to create hazardous marine conditions despite relatively fair skies.
Marine Hazards
Boaters can expect:
- Strong easterly trade winds of 20–25 knots
- Rough, steep seas up to 9 feet in the windiest channels
- Difficult navigation for small boats
- Increased risk of capsizing in exposed waters
- Reduced comfort and safety for recreational boating activities
Safety Tips for Mariners
If you plan to be on Hawaii’s coastal waters:
- Consider postponing trips in advisory areas.
- Wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
- Secure loose equipment before departing.
- Monitor the latest marine forecasts before leaving port.
- File a float plan with family or friends.
- Keep marine communication equipment fully charged and operational.
- Return to harbor immediately if conditions worsen.
Outlook
Forecasters expect breezy trade winds to persist through the end of the week, with hazardous marine conditions likely continuing across Hawaii’s windier coastal waters. Mariners should remain alert for additional advisories or extensions as the pressure gradient remains strong over the central Pacific.
